Great Start is Michigan’s nationally recognized state-wide initiative supporting school readiness and life success for young children.
The Dickinson Iron Great Start Collaborative is beginning year 12 as one of Michigan’s 54 Great Start Collaboratives! In March 2006, the Dickinson-Iron Great Start Collaborative was one of the first 14 collaboratives to be funded in Michigan.
DICKINSON IRON GREAT START
The MISSION of the Great Start Collaborative is to engage the entire community to assure a coordinated system of support, services and resources is available to assist Dickinson and Iron County families in achieving a ‘great start’ in school for all children from birth to eight years old.
To be successful in school and in life, children must grow up in an environment that develops self confidence, positive social and emotional skills and a love for learning. The Great Start Collaborative serves families and involves the entire community in a partnership designed to benefit young children and families.
IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD!
The power of working together cannot be overstated. Great Start Collaborative Members understand and value the importance of early childhood education. The Dickinson Iron Great Start hosts numerous monthly meetings, parent leadership trainings and family events. Representatives from businesses, health agencies, nonprofit organizations, education, human services, hospitals, colleges, court systems and other stakeholders all meet to create a movement in Dickinson and Iron Counties aimed at involving the entire community in supporting families as they raise their young children to succeed in school and in life. Great Start leaders advocate for children by helping to prepare children ages birth through age 8 for a ‘great start’ in school!

SERVICES, SUPPORT AND RESOURCES
Great Start leaders are always advocating for services, support and resources in communities when they do not exist. School readiness for all children can only happen when parents know what they need and they know where they can go to get their needs met. Since everyone has something to contribute, Great Start is committed to forming partnerships and recruiting all sectors of the community to join together to create early learning opportunities for all children.
